Artist Statement

Thank you for taking the time to review my artist Statement. I am a professional landscape and travel photographer with twelve years of experience, deeply committed to meeting the unique challenges of this field. I hold an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Professional Photography and am an active member of both the North American Nature Photographers Association and the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.

My academic training encompassed comprehensive instruction in both film and digital photography, covering a diverse range of subjects such as landscapes, portraits, commercial assignments, weddings and events. Following college, I had the opportunity to work under a distinguished commercial photographer, whose expertise significantly contributed to my professional development. Nevertheless, I ultimately chose to pursue independent artistic endeavors to fully realize my creative vision.

For me, photography is fundamentally about engagement and connection. Each subject must evoke an emotional response, resulting in expressive fine art prints designed to captivate viewers. While the majority of my work focuses on the United States, I have also undertaken extensive projects in Venice Italy, Iceland, Japan, Oaxaca Mexico, and The Azores Islands. Looking ahead, I plan to continue my work  throughout the American West during 2025 and 2026.

All of my photographic and printing processes are conducted using digital equipment. Although I posses significant experience  with film and darkroom techniques, I recognize digital photography as the contemporary standard. While I maintain a lasting respect for film photography, I believe that, when executed skillfully, digital photography achieves comparable quality.  In my work flow, image creation is not complete at the act of capture; instead it involves thoughtful post-production to ensure that the final print accurately represents my vision and emotional intent. An unprocessed image remains unfinished.

I utilize Canon 5D Mk2 and Mk4 digital cameras, employing lens from 17mm to 800mm and rarely relying on flash. After capturing RAW files, I process them in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, applying adjustments to exposure, contrast, and saturation as necessary. I handle all printing personally using an Epson 3880 Pro printer, working with Epson Velvet Fine Art Paper and Ultra Premium Luster Photo Paper.

Driven by a passion for exploration and documentation of the American West, I am dedicated to producing the highest caliber of emotionally resonant fine art photography. These works are created for the enjoyment of both me and my audience.

My aim is to inspire viewers to see the world from a new perspective. I am truly passionate about my craft.

     ~Tommy
