"K-28 100th Anniversary"
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

On October 16th and 17th, 2023 I photographed on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's, K-28 100th Anniversary Photo Excursion. In 1923 the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad purchased 10 K28 engines. Seven of the K-28 engines were requisitioned by the US Army for use in Alaska during WW2 and were scrapped after the war. The three remaining engines continued in service across southern Colorado until 1951.

Now the three make the San Juan mountains come alive with western history as they steam through San Juan National Forest in Colorado.

"Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad"

Constructed in the 1880s, the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad originally served the silver mines of Colorado as a narrow-gauge extension of the Rio Grande Railroad. Today, its steam engines transport tourists from Antonito, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico, traversing the state line with scenic views.
